sound sample Northumbrian smallpipes in C

      NACHTRAG 08.09.22:

      (A) (B) (C) (C#) D E (F) F# G (G#) A (Bb) B (C) (C#) D (E) (F#) (G#) (A)

    • Hej Zusammen,

muss doch kurz meinen Senf dazugeben.

    • Hello, Schelmenkopf, thank you very much for sharing your work, I've been looking for plans for kaba gaida for a long time, to no avail, so it was a great joy to see your drawings.
I have some doubts: the only drone that appears, is it specifically for only one of the tunings of the chanters shown, or for all the chanters?
the holes drilled at an angle of 30 ° in the chanter of the kaba gaida in D, is this angle in the direction of the bell of the chanter or towards the reed of the chanter?
If you can clarify my doubts I would appreciate it, again thank you very much for your work.

The drone has an extension from E to D and suits for all the chanters in my thoughts.

The bore angle is also for every chanter and it goes downwards to the bell to get the oval shape of the bores. Mike Nelson writes on his Northumbrian Pipes Site it imrpoves the sound
and maybe it makes tuning with a knife easier.

On my few tries with the chanter reed it was to low in the lower notes, it gets better when you widen up the slit in direction to the slim end.
The conical bore reeds also reacts to pressure changes - it makes tuning dificult I think you should use a manometer like Mike Nelson.
On the other hand it could be possible to play this bagpipes with dynamics in loudness.
Maybe you should make the drone reed with a straight bore and tongue shape for more tone stability.

For the Djura Gaida chanter you should use straight bores and use the shape of the reeds for bohemian bagpipes, because the conical bore you need a bigger air volume
for the low notes. The reed tongue should also have a straight shape.

      dudy-gajdy.at/app/download/132…TBUCH_CZ.pdf?t=1547773171

Notice: All this plans are just prototypes, I just made an Kaba Gaida Chanter in E which isn't tuned to finish. Another point is the bell note of the chanter,
it`s to low so you have to bore a tuning hole. I would not shorten the bell, to keep the tone stability of the bottom note.

    • Hello Schelmenkopf, very grateful for your drawings, I like this instrument in all its forms and sounds, it has been great to find this forum and learn about its operation, construction, and especially its mathematical physics, a matter that is not in any other place.

I would like to know if you have drawings, if you have made scottish small pipes in C. I would like at some point to make this bagpipe with this tuning.

      Cheers

I can't give any guarantee that the things - espacially the science part - from my posts are facts. But I think, it's always better than a start for pipemaking hobbyist and beginners with nothing.

You can use this online tool to get the length for your pipes, but you must use the 1/4 of the wave length (a A2 bass drone has 110Hz and 3,118m physical length, the real length for the standing wave ist about 0,775m - for example the bass drone of the Great Highland Bagpipe).

      ----------------------------------------------------

No, I don't have any plan for a Scottish Smallpipes Set in C but I can tell you where to start:

The modern Scottish Smallpipes are an re-invention from Colin Ross, Maker of Northumbrian Smallpipes. You should visit Mike Nelson's homepage - use the drawings for the Large and small d drones from the

"concert pitch F" set, they're are in C. Use the drawing from of the Large G Drone form the "Concert G" Set and you have three drones with tuning holes, so you can play in C-myxolodian and D-minor.

If you want to play in F-major then use instead the Large G Drone from the F-Set. When you make a second thumb hole, like on the french pipes you get an Eflat and can play tunes in Bflat-major and

G-minor - very useful for irish tunes (on an a chanter it would be a Cnat).

The Scottish Smallpipes and the Northumbrian Smallpipes have mostly all the same reeds and with the drawings for smallpipe chanters in the following thread, you should get a rough estimate for

the chanter - the length of the chanter is 310-329mm or 12,5-13 inches.

      marktsack.de/community/index.p…nd-zylindrischer-bohrung/

For the drone bores you can use the measurements Bass D, Tenor A, Tenor D:

      Bohrungsdurchmesser von oben nach unten:

      Bass A: 5,5 - 5,0 - 4,7; Stimmzüge 80mm x 11mm ID
      Bass D: 5,0 - 4,7; Stimmzug 70 x 10mm ->>> als Bariton 5,0 - 4,5
      Tenor A: 4,5 - 4,0; Stimmzug 55 x 9mm ID
      Tenor D: 4,0 -3,5; Stimmzu 45 x 8mm ID

      Measurements for a bellow

      daye1.com/bagpage/makepipe/pc_up_parts.html

For the measurements of the stocks you can use the drawings oft the Northumbrian D Set here in this thread and when you like, you can use the drawings of the C Set to get a C0 Bass -
one octave under the standard bass and the triple C produces an Uilleann-pipish drone sound. The borings for the C0-Bass are suitable for the Scottish Smallpipes, too.

Excuse me for grammar mistakes, my english is not the best.
    • Hi Schelmenkopf, I have a question, I was reading your post where you show how to calculate a conical drilling chanter, respectively the inner cone, the positioning of the holes, etc. what would be the method to calculate cylindrical drilling chanter? its length for a given tonic, position of the fingering holes and sizing of its reed. If you could explain the method or theory to me, it would be of great help to project this type of simpler chanter, in my absolute ignorance, but wanting to learn.

      marktsack.de/community/index.p…mensuren-h%C3%BCmmelchen/

In this thread I tried to figure out a method to calculate the fingering holes.

At first the chanter length - the physical wave length of your six finger fronthole note (on a Scottish Smallpipes in C is it the low C = 328mm) suits for the most of the bagpipes that I know.
A longer Chanter (maybe 368mm, for this C-Chanter the wave length of the low Bflat) could be better for the tone stability and for overblowing.

The position of the finger holes is in relation to the note that the chanter reed produces. Single reed, cylindrical chanters have a reed which produce a half note upwards to the highest note of the chanter.
Double reeded cylindrical chanters like the Scottish Smallpipes or the Hümmelchen have a reed in Bflat5 to Cnat6. Because this relative high notes, the A chanter of a scottish smallpipes has so much space from
the top of the chanter to the thumb hole. The double reed for conical chanters produce a note two octaves - a half note under the bell note ( for a german sherperd pipes the lowest note is a F4, your chanter reed produces a E6).

I have no method to calculate the dimensions for a reed, because the dimensions of the reed have an great influence to the sound of the reed.

      ---------------------------------------------------------------------------

I try to explain it tomorrow, I have to go to bed.
    • Here we go again.

You can imagine that the air in the chanter bore works like a string from a guitar.

The tension comes from the widthness of the bore and the playing pressure of the reed. It makes the note from the fret next to your slap hand.
For example a C6 on a Hümmelchen reed - you got this note in the throat of the chanter, the passage between reed seat and the chanter bore.
This is the point where you start to calculate the finger holes. The whole chanter bore is like you play an open string.
Without any fingerholes, it should produce a note lower then your six finger note. With added (all closed) finger holes the tone of the chanter
lowers a half note - more or less.

So I try to explain the steps to calculate the measurements for the finger holes.

      1. Calculate the air volume of 1mm from the chanter bore
      2. Calculate the air volume for all the finger holes and key holes, with the wall thickness.

Notice: For cylindrical bores you can use the diameters for the finger holes from the plans I have listed in the forum, because they're proportional to the inner bore.
Around a diameter of 50% to the inner bore you can produce semitones.

      3. Calculate how much air volume the you have to add for the fingerholes - for example 7,6mm. This is a correction to put the finger holes upwards.
      4. Calculate the wave length of the basic not from your chanter reed this is another correction, too.
      5. At next, you need the wave length for the first note - subtract both corrections from it and the volume/calculated mm's of the finger hole.

Notice: On this point you have the position from the finger hole with 100% of the diameter of the inner bore. You have to calculate the next full note above
and then you multiply/divide the distance between the theoretical centers from the finger holes with the difference in percent.

Congratiolutaion, you measured out your first finger hole! - Theoretically.

      6. Repeat this claculation and add correction mm's from the finger holes above the actual calculated one.

      ------------------------------------------------------------------

For conical bores I can't give a really useful instruction, but maybe some little help:

      1. Calculate the average diameter of the air cylinder your conical bore theoretically have.
      2. Convert the finger hole diameters from a cylindrical bored chanter to your average air cylinder (for example 10mm on a german sherperd pipes)

Notice: Your maximal diameter for a finger hole is now 10mm.

      3. Adjust the reduction of the diameter in relation to the cone

The rest of the calculation should be the same as for cylindrical bores.
